Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, there has been a groundswell of interest
in effective pain management for children, reflecting an appreciation of the psychologic
and neurodevelopmental impact of unrelieved pain on our smallest patients. New understanding
about the ontogeny of pain pathways in the developing brain and the importance of
neural plasticity provide researchers with a sense of urgency to improve the management
of perioperative pain.
